Oye Lucky Lucky Oye Movie Review and Reports

If Khosla Ka Ghosla had multiple master performers, Oye Lucky belongs solely to Abhay Deol. In what has perhaps been one of his best performances so far, Abhay (playing Lucky) shows he’s quite capable of carrying a film on his shoulders. If for nothing else, the film deserves applause purely for his acting. He carries off the character of an aspiring young boy from Old Delhi effortlessly.

Of course, the film too captures the sentiment and ambience of the city quite well. In terms of its shooting locales and even the way in which the characters speak remind you of the part of the Capital where cycle rickshaws ply even to this day and a Sunday evening out does not necessarily mean visiting a multiplex.

Quite like Khosla Ka Ghosla, the dialogues in this film continue to remain its strong point. Most of them are untranslatable. But I’m going to try to translate this one: While reporting from the scene of crime, a reporter from a Hindi news channel gets frustrated and shoots back at his producer saying, “Kitne baar ‘Sansanikhez’ bulwaoge mujhse? Ghar mein biwi poochti hai khaana kaise chahiye, to mooh se nikal jaata hai ‘Sansanikhez’!” (How many times are you going you make me say ‘Sensational’? At home when the wife asks me how I’d like my meals to be, I invariably say, ‘Sensational’!”)

What does not work

Yet like most Indian films, the biggest flaw of Oye Lucky continues to remain its length. A story that could have been told in about 90 minutes gets stretched to over two hours. After a point you find yourself saying, ‘Get on with it!’ because all you see Lucky doing is stealing and giving the police a slip over and over again.

Verdict: Oye Lucky is great fun. It’ll make you laugh if you are from North India. It will make you laugh even if you aren’t.

sorry bhai movie review

Well, how do we describe Onir’s latest film Sorry Bhai? It is supposed to be a romantic comedy that goes wrong at the very beginning…

The story revolves around a shy scientist Siddharth Mathur (Sharman Joshi) who visits Mauritius for his brother’s (Sanjay Suri aka Harsh) engagement. Their mom (Shabana Azmi) seems least interested in attending the event as Harsh has decided to marry a girl against her wishes. However, Harsh makes Siddharth swear on their mom (’Maa kasam’ which Siddharth takes quite seriously) requesting him to bring everyone along.

Interestingly this ‘Maa kasam’ plays a significant part in the film, which we shall come back to later.

Harsh is busy with his work all the time so Aliyah, his fiancée (Chitrangda Singh), takes it on her to make Harsh’s family feel at home. She takes them around for a guided tour and is helped by Siddharth in her effort. Both Aaliyah and Siddharth spend much time together and feel attracted towards each other. Need we say more?!

Onir tries to cash in on Shabana and Boman’s (who plays Harsh and Siddharth’s dad) chemistry in Honeymoon Travels… especially recapturing their kissing scene in this one, and undoubtedly succeeds in doing so. The couple looks very much at ease together and come across as the only highpoint in the film.

It comes as a real surprise as how a filmmaker like Onir, who has made sensitive films like My Brother… Nikhil and Bas Ek Pal could come up with something like this. Despite choosing a done-to-death subject of a love triangle, the film leaves ample scope for improvisation. Sorry Bhai has nothing outstanding to offer besides a few amusing moments.

Shabana does a brilliant job as a spying mom running after Siddharth and Aaliyah. Also the way she teases Boman to try and kiss her brightens up the otherwise wearying flow. Boman complements Shabana in every possible way as an understanding and doting father. Sanjay Suri has hardly anything to do. He looks funny when he should have looked heartbroken. Chitrangda who returns on screen after a hiatus appears hot, but she still needs to hone her acting skills. Sharman does a commendable job both as a cranky scientist trying to ‘fly a wooden dog’ applying brainwave or as a hesitant suitor to his brother’s fiancée.

Coming back to ‘Maa Kasam’, Onir seems confused and so is the audience. One fails to understand whether he wants to spoof on Dharmendra’s punchline, “Maa Kasam, main tera khun pi jaunga” or

actually paying a tribute to him. He makes Boman repeatedly ask Sharman as to why he takes it so seriously, to which Sharman finally replies, he doesn’t want to take a chance. He actually sticks to his

promise and prepares himself to sacrifice his girl for his mom. Now that’s a bit much, since all the characters in the film are modern and progressive in their attitude towards life.

The music in the film has no recall value either. The item song at the end, Sorry Bhai, was too much to digest.

VERDICT: Overall, Onir disappoints audience in his endeavour to be ‘different’ with a clichéd storyline and ordinary approach.

RATING: 1.5/5 for Shabana and Boman.

Rahul Mahajan to Enter Bollywood

Rahul Mahajan has been bitten by the acting bug. After leaving the ‘Bigg Boss’ house, the most popular inmate of the reality show says he will now make his career by acting in Bollywoood films.

‘Working in Bollywood is what I see myself doing. I’ve to make a living. And that would be through the entertainment industry. But no matter what I do, I’d remain the same Rahul in blue jeans and white shirts. I want people to love and respect me,’ Rahul told IANS in an interview.

Rahul, the son of late Bharatiya Janata Party leader Pramod Mahajan, says he is flooded with acting offers.

‘A lot of acting offers are coming my way. Do you know my mom and dad were stage actors? And they met for the first time on stage. That’s how they fell in love. I think both politics and acting are in my blood,’ Rahul said.

Excerpts:

Q: Now you’re out of ‘Bigg Boss’ what do you want to do with your life?

A: Working in Bollywood is what I see myself doing. That would be a professional decision. A lot of people ask if I’d be joining politics. But politics koi dhanda nahin hai (politics is not a business). If I’ve to do it for the country’s sake, I’d do it. But I’ve to make a living. And that would be through the entertainment industry. But no matter what I do, I’d remain the same Rahul in blue jeans and white shirts. I want people to love and respect me.

Q: Which turns you on more, politics or acting?

A: A lot of acting offers are coming my way. Do you know my mom and dad were stage actors? And they met for the first time on stage. That’s how they fell in love. I asked my dad why he wasn’t in the movies. He was going to do a movie once. I teased him, ‘Why are you promoting yourself, when you should be promoting me in movies?’ I think both politics and acting are in my blood.

Q: Since you didn’t need money, why did you go into ‘Bigg Boss’?

A: First of all, everyone needs money to survive. But I had bigger issues on hand. I needed to go in there to show people the real Rahul Mahajan. I wanted people to stop judging me without knowing who I was. This is what people were doing before I went in the house.

Q: Your facial packs, fast talking flirtations…. made ‘Bigg Boss’ a soap opera?

A: I was just being myself. I wasn’t pretending to be someone else. People saw the naughty Rahul on the show and then they saw the mature Rahul who leaves the show just five days before it was meant to end. Both the child and the mature Rahul are me. If I was just an irresponsible child, I wouldn’t have been able to cope with all the troubles in my life in the last few years. When it comes to trying times, I rise to the occasion. That’s what I proved on ‘Bigg Boss’. I was able to take decisions on behalf of the whole team. And when I had to quit I did so.

Q: Why did you quit ‘Bigg Boss’?

A: You know last week we broke out of the house because there was no food in the house. And I didn’t know how to cook. So I wasn’t the kitchen in-charge. The four of us in the house were psychologically demoralised. I can’t explain the group psychology to you. You’ve to be there to know what we went through. We were like animals migrating from home when hungry. We left to have food. After 90 days, we were under a lot of pressure. And after we did, one of us had to take the rap on behalf of all four housemates. So I quit.

Q: So do you regret leaving the house without permission?

A: No I don’t regret it at all. It was the decision of the moment. Maybe another time I’d deal with the situation more maturely.

Q: Who’s the real love of your life Payal Rohatgi or Monica Bedi?

A: Neither. They’re both friends.

Q: We saw you you openly flirting with both?

A: If one stays in the same house with others there’s bound to be some fun. I’ve known Payal for many years. I made a friend out of Monica in the ‘Bigg Boss’ house. And I’m not a fair-weather friend. I’ll continue to be friends with them through thick and thin.

Q: Have you succeeded in showing the real Rahul Mahajan to the world?

A: I think I have. Like I said, I was being myself. Whether it was playing Krishna or leaving the house for food, I was being my honest genuine self. Hate me or love me. But you can’t ignore me.

Q: Does the world look different to you now?

A: The world is the same. I probably look different to the world.

Just six months back, the small town dhaba owner had surprised everyone by winning MTV Roadies 5.0.

Ashutosh had tremendous support from audiences all over, and especially from north India and his home town of Saharanpur.

Although it was obvious from the votes and comments that Rahul and Raja were the favourites for winning the title, slowly but surely Ashu made a place in the hearts of viewers.

Whether it was his broken English, his minor tantrums or his alleged liaison with former Miss World Diana Hayden, Ashutosh the simpleton was seen as a man who needed the money (read a Rs 1 crore booty) more than anybody else.

In fact, after his exit, Rahul Mahajan too was of the opinion that Ashu should win.
