What Happens in Vegas stars Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz as a pair of New Yorkers enjoying a weekend of decadence with their respective best friends in Las Vegas.
They get drunk one night, and wake up the next morning to discover they’re married.
Horrified, they get into an argument about who is dumping whom, which somehow ends with HIM winning a 3-million-dollar jackpot using a quarter SHE lent him. Cut to both of them in court, each staking claim on the money.
The judge however orders them to “six months hard marriage”, insisting that if they fail, neither will get to see a dime. They’re left with little choice but to live together, and they get by through mutual abuse and nasty pranks.
Unoriginal and juvenile, this film plays out as your standard by-the-numbers romantic-comedy whose humour is derived from the same old clichés — ‘men-are-slobs-women-are-calculating-shrews’.
A film like this would have been a lot more enjoyable if the wisecracks they trade were smarter, but all they do here is exchange insults with whip-crack timing.
Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz are both very likeable actors but What Happens in Vegas is such a predictable film, it barely gives these actors a chance to exploit their goofy side.
If you’re not very fussy about wanting to watch something smart and original, then give this film a chance, it’s not unwatchable.
